The Differences Between Cosmetic Surgery and Cosmetic Orthopedic Surgery?
Cosmetic specialties can dramatically improve an individual’s day-to-day life by enhancing a healthy lifestyle and positive outlook. There are pronounced differences between a cosmetic surgeon and an orthopedic surgeon, but there is some surprising overlap. Cosmetic surgeons are involved in aesthetic procedures, and orthopedic surgeons treat patients with musculoskeletal issues such as spinal deformities or abnormalities of the bones, tendons, muscles, and ligaments of the arms and legs.
But what happens when a world-class, board-certified orthopedic surgeon, who understands the complexities of how the body’s structure is layered, from superficial to deep, does a fellowship in cosmetic surgery?
There is one such surgeon in the world. Meet Dr. Steven Cyr. Tapping into his vast knowledge of anatomy, Doctor Cyr developed a state-of-the-art method to deliver the most sculpted, atomically accurate cosmetic result. It’s called OrthoSculpt™. This proprietary approach leverages his unique knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and blends it with cosmetic surgery. Additionally, Dr. Cyr layers his expertise in liposculpture. In simple terms, Dr. Cyr created cosmetic orthopedic surgery to “see” the multi-layers of your body’s anatomy and apply it to sculpting the body.
What is Liposculpture?
Liposculpture is one of the latest plastic surgery innovations. As its name suggests, liposculpture is a variation of liposuction. But unlike liposuction – which removes fat from specific areas of the body – liposculpture is not just about removing fat. It also reshapes the body.
By eliminating fat from two layers, instead of one with traditional liposuction, and then adding the fat to the “right places,” the surgeon improves the body’s overall contour.
Etching becomes possible using VASER high-definition liposuction, which allows an experienced surgeon to do muscle definition. Waistline snatching is an innovation made possible by using VASER liposuction, which adds to the hourglass shape that many women dream about. It can also enhance a man’s masculine physique. Understanding the differences in muscle shape and the body’s ideal proportions allows these techniques to enhance anyone’s body.
During a liposculpture procedure, Dr. Cyr removes fat deposits that have been liquefied by the VASER ultrasound procedure through sterile thin metal tubes inserted into the body through small incisions. A medical suction pump removes the fat by creating an area of negative pressure for fat preservation. After fat removal, he transfers the cleaned, healthy fat to another body part that needs to be plumped or curved, such as:
- The breasts
- Buttocks
- Hip dips
- Face
- Hands
This is called fat transfer or grafting.
In general, liposculpting is more complex than liposuction because the surgeon must evaluate the overall dimensions and shape of the body along with the patient’s goals for each surgical plan. Not all doctors have the visual ability to do an in-depth surgical assessment and to “see” the results in advance. The surgeon must have an artistic eye, excellent spatial ability, in addition to excellent surgical technique. Taking out the maximum amount of fat is not always the way to create the best aesthetic results. It’s taking it from just the right places in the right amounts.
Another Vital Factor in Achieving Superior Results
There is another essential element to any liposuction especially with advanced liposculpture. Skin. Most poor liposuction results, unrelated to shape, are due to sagging, dimpled, or rippled skin.
With body sculpting using VASER HD lipo, the surgeon can do two things that no other technology can do.
- They can remove more fat to a degree not available with other types of liposuction.
- They can remove fat from the subcutaneous layer (the fat right under the skin) to highly define the underlying muscle.
For the result to look natural, the skin must re-drape to your new shape. In the case of overstretched skin from a sizable weight loss, pregnancy, or age, the skin will rarely snap back to fit the body’s new shape. Plus, our skin begins to lose its collagen and elastin as we age, giving skin its regenerative and elastic qualities.
In these cases, Dr. Cyr has two options to offer.
- Renuvion (J-plasma) skin tightening
- Excision of excess skin
Depending on how much loose skin you have or your age, Renuvion may not work. It offers impressive results for modest looseness of skin that still has good elasticity.
If Dr. Cyr recommends skin excision, you can be sure it is the only option to give you tight skin that will provide a superior body sculpting result. The good news is that when he removes excess skin, he removes the fat underneath forever!
Dr. Cyr – A Sculptor in the Operating Room
To summarize, the OrthoSculpt™ technique uses liposculpture to sculpt the body with VASER high-definition liposuction technology followed by Renuvion skin tightening in most cases. Dr. Cyr’s ability to visualize through the skin to the underlying muscles allows him to sculpt your body naturally. Think of him as an architect of Cosmetic Orthopedic Surgery in the OR
